Developing a repeatable process that supports and inspires designers at Motorola Solutions to refine and envision new products.

The Moment team collaborated with the UX Innovation Labs at Motorola Solutions to propose a Lean User Experience Research program (LUXR) as a venue for designers and technologists to learn and gather feedback from public safety workers. Besides, providing inspiration and driving innovation, the LUXR was designed to monitor changes in behavior that are driven by technology and culture. It consisted of two pilot sessions, interviewed three patrol officers, and observed by six designers.

MY ROLe

I was responsible for facilitating workshops with key partners to identify business needs, then participated in research sessions to understand the expectations, motivations and mindset of the users and last proposed an iterative design methodology to help Motorola Solutions UX team to rapidly test, learn and iterate on new products.

THE APPROACH

With a rapidly changing technology landscape, we understood that it was becoming difficult for Motorola Solutions to focus their efforts on ideas that could really make a difference. Public safety workers had more choices in how they communicate than ever before, and many of these choices offered value beyond the core functionality of the radio. For Motorola Solutions to continue as a trusted leader in public safety communications in a post-radio economy, they had to equip themselves with structures that supported continuous learning and drove opportunities for innovation in a timely manner.

To achieve this, we designed focused sessions that allowed deep-dive conversations on topics and concepts that were then course corrected faster rather than spending cycles polishing ideas that didn't work. By building a lean research capability into the product development workflow, the UX team was able to improve concept quality through quick iteration and to guide new products into the marketplace.
